4 Factors to Consider When Choosing Battery for Video Towers

If you’ve ever been to a sporting event, you’ve probably seen the large video towers that line the sidelines. These video towers usually extend over 20ft high and provide an elevated angle of the game for coaches, teams, and fans.

Have you ever wondered how these video towers are powered? These towers are typically powered by various batteries, which enables them to receive the power needed and also the flexibility to film practically anywhere.

What Is ‘mAh’, and Why Is It Important?

The term mAh is a unit of measurement for electrical current. It’s short for milliampere-hour and is a way to measure the capacity of a battery. To power a sideline video tower, you need a battery with a high mAh rating. This ensures that the battery will be able to provide the necessary power for the duration of the game or event.

A Few Things To Consider When Choosing a Battery?

Here’s a rundown of some of the most important things to keep in mind:

1. Type

There are two main types of batteries – lead acid and lithium-ion. Lead acid batteries are cheaper but also heavier and have a shorter lifespan. Lithium-ion batteries are more expensive but lighter and have a longer lifespan. Most sideline video towers include lithium-ion batteries.

2. Capacity

How long do you need the battery to last? This will be determined by device it is powering, and also the number of devices being powered. Make sure to choose a battery with enough capacity to power your devices multiple games/events. This is important because it will allow you a buffer in case you forget to charge your battery after one practice or game.

3. Compatibility

It’s important that you choose batteries that are compatible with the device you are looking to power. For example, if you need to power your viewing monitor, there is a specific lithium-ion battery that is needed to properly connect to the viewing monitor (we recommend NPF-970 battery for many field viewing monitors).

4. Warranty

Be sure to check the warranty. In most cases the manufacturer’s warranty is between 6-12 months.

Video towers are extremely useful for capturing high-angle and aerial video footage. They are especially great for shooting any sporting event, as they provide a unique perspective that benefit coaches, players, and fans.

To power these towers, you must choose a battery with the best type, capacity, compatibility, and warranty. With these factors in mind, you’re ready to start capturing amazing video footage!
